BIRD CALLS
Over the seasons, LEMAIRE has introduced bird calls into its line of collectibles. These whistles have been carved in a limited edition. They are tools to recognise birds by their song and to communicate with them.
This series of accessories emerged from a dialogue between LEMAIRE and Quelle Est Belle Company, a small bird call manufacturer located in the rural Drôme region of France. The business is run by François Morel, who has been carving bird calls since he was a child, in keeping with his motto:
“The closer our relationship to nature, the better we can protect it."
The handcrafted bird calls are made from locallysourced wood – beech, maple, and ash – using artisanal methods. They are then carefully painted andlacquered by hand to reflect the plumage of the birdwhose sound they imitate.
Fitted with a knotted leather cord, the calls can be worn around the neck or attached to other accessories. Each is engraved with a serial number, making it one of a kind. For the Fall/Winter 2023 collection, 25 whistles each were chiseled for four birds: the Goldfinch (carduelis), the Seagull (laridae), the Tern (sterninae) and the Swallow (hirundinidae). 10 of each of the Wagtail (motacilla) and the Cuckoo (cuculidae) were later editioned for the Spring/Summer 2024 collection.
